Rivian R1T, R1S Gen 2 Test Driven: High Tech, Down and Dirty
Rivian has recently released the second generation of their R1T and R1S electric utility vehicles, boasting over 600 new parts and significant improvements to performance, range, and comfort. In a test-drive at the DirtFish Rally School, the R1S showcased its enhanced suspension, wheel, and tire packages, providing a smooth and comfortable ride even in rugged off-road conditions. The all-wheel drive system was praised for its intuitive handling, giving drivers confidence on tight turns and slippery terrains.
The new zonal architecture of the electrical system reduces over 1.6 meters of wires from the vehicle, resulting in a lighter and more efficient design. The software overhaul introduces new real-time 3D graphics and animations to enhance the user experience. The quad motor powertrains of the R1T and R1S deliver impressive acceleration, with the R1T outperforming the R1S in drag races due to its weight and wheelbase differences.
With updated battery technology and charging capabilities, the second generation R1 vehicles offer between 258 and 420 miles of range, depending on the configuration. The new design features, such as RGB LED light bars and digital Matrix projection headlamps, add a touch of modernity to these high-tech electric vehicles. Overall, the Gen 2 R1T and R1S represent a significant step forward for Rivian, bringing innovation and performance to the world of electric vehicles.
