Summary of The Prisoner (1955)
The Prisoner is a compelling drama set in the tumultuous aftermath of World War II, directed by the esteemed Peter Glenville. The film stars the legendary Alec Guinness as a prominent cardinal unjustly imprisoned in an unnamed Eastern European country for treason. Jack Hawkins delivers a chilling performance as the cardinal’s manipulative interrogator, a former resistance fighter who employs relentless psychological tactics and sleep deprivation in an attempt to break the cardinal’s will.
The narrative explores themes of faith, betrayal, and the strength of the human spirit under duress. As the cardinal endures intense pressure to issue a public confession, the film skillfully reveals the moral complexities of loyalty and conviction in a postwar landscape that is as hostile as it is uncertain.
The cinematography highlights the stark, oppressive environment of the prison, reflecting the internal struggle of the cardinal as he grapples with his beliefs and the demands placed upon him. The tension is masterfully built through a dialogue-driven script that raises profound questions about power, oppression, and the price of conviction.

Sir Alec Guinness was a genius, always a tough act to follow.
Good movie.. At first, I thought I was looking at Pope Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi … lol
Excellent movie, with two of Britain's best in top form. It's a great study of the totalitarian system in action, and a great study of what the perps and the victims do. Is this based on a play? Like to see it performed.
❤These black and white flims always
When cameras were nice and slow watching all the attention details

Were the days back then golden years when we had the best stars back then

This is the story of Cardinal Mindszenti, primate of Hungary Catholic Church. It's an excellent movie. Alec Guinness started his conversion process filming this movie.
Hungary🙄
Catholic Church , full of perverts, pedorasts and pedofiles, cloaked in a curtain of absolute denial.
Adverts interrupted frequently by the film.
The Prisoner 1955 rotten tomatoes gives it 63%
I don't mind slow movies but this one was glacial in its pace.
Vatican is the serpent
The terrifying fact is if the Marxist- style Fabians in the current UK Labour government acheve the aims and objectives of their One-State Europe the content of this film has the potential to be repeated in reality in time.
Come on, Stream City. It's 2026. There's no excuse for uploading movies at 480p.
Ruined by ad after ad.
Why blast ads so loudly???
Never buying Samsung again.
Today – Hungary is a right wing Police State – with torture and detention as normal
The interrogator reminded me of a member of the UKs Green Party.
unwatchable , due to breaks every 4-5 min
Communist murdered many millions an still will
Alec and jack two of my favourite actors, but I’m sorry to say this really wasn’t my cup of tea. I actually found it incredibly boring and the first three minutes were unbearable , but each to their own aye . ALAW MOT
When English was correctly spoken , pronounced and understood .A pleasure to watch .
Cardinal Mindszenty's life and battle against the Soviet domination of Hungary and Communism were the subject of the
1950 American film
" Guilty of Treason,"
partly based on his personal papers and started CHARLES BICKFORD as the cardinal.
A really great film. Also a pity this channel chose commerce over art with the shameless intrusion of more and more adverts. That becomes a rookie mistake as it ends up being a bad avert for the channel. I certainly will not be back. Find a place to watch this fine pic elsewhere.
The Cardinal was not in any wartime resistance : there was none; Hungary was an Axis state.
Less sympathy today.
Films like this persuaded generations that Communism is evil, fortunately not me. Capitalism has driven us to the edge of extinction as a species..
It's strange to see the beloved British actor Jack Hawkins renowned for his portrayal of dedicated police officers, stoic army/navy/RAF officers etc appearing out of character as a sadistic interrogator in the communist secret police. Incidentally he played a similar part in the earlier film State Secret 1950 where his prey was a dedicated doctor played by Douglas Fairbanks jr.
Fix the audio
It's terrible
It's too low
Or, at least put the "captions " on.
