Set against the backdrop of the 1950s, The Young Don’t Cry is a poignant exploration of loneliness, rebellion, and the quest for belonging. The film follows a tough but big-hearted orphan who encounters a runaway convict, leading them both into a perilous journey. Sal Mineo delivers a raw and emotional performance as a troubled teen yearning for connection, perfectly embodying the era’s rebellious spirit.
James Whitmore complements Mineo’s portrayal with a quietly intense performance as a fugitive haunted by his past, navigating a world that feels relentlessly unforgiving. Three of my brothers are in this movie. The black haired boy who Sal goes up to and asks it he's taken a shower – then checks his feet and he takes his pajama shirt off by hanging it on a hook – is my brother who was a year older than I. He was seven at the time and died from an automobile accident when he was 41. The dark haired guy in the truck that yells something at the boys when they are leaving campus is my brother who is now 80. "Stanley" who is asked to ring the bell – is my 81 year old brother. It was so fun watching this movie today! I have one other brother who is now 62. He wasn't born yet when the movie was filmed. And yes, we are all from Savannah where the movie was made.
The premature death of Sal Mineo was a great loss to the world.

The Young Don't Cry (1957) Outstanding picture. One of the best I've seen on YouTube, no question. The dialogue and sentient direction is tremendous. Sal Mineo plays a strong lead. The entire cast pull a lot of weight!
Alfred Werner also directed one of the best film noirs in 1948 which was “He walked by night “ with some uncredited direction by Anthony Mann.
Sal Mineo 💔😭
James Whitmore was 36 in 1957 when this movie was released, while Sal Mineo was 18.
A black & white movie
Outstanding film. I am blessed to having lived during an era when Hollyweird knew how to write and film a good story. It's heartbreaking to think of the trash they award now. Thanks for posting.
