Why I Photographed the War in Ukraine on 19th-Century Glass

After the invasion began, Israeli photographer Edward Kaprov traveled from Kharkiv to the ruins of Bakhmut and Kherson. But he didn’t bring a digital camera.

To document the front line, Edward used the collodion process—the exact same technique used to photograph the Crimean War 170 years ago. By capturing modern conflict on glass plates, he created a bridge across history, finding “slices of life” among the men, women, and children caught in the crossfire.

“I was born in the USSR, in Siberia, but I am not Russian,” Edward says. “When the bombs fell on Kyiv, I couldn’t believe it. This was the scale of WWII all over again. My grandfathers were Ukrainian. For me, this isn’t just a news story—this war is my war.”
