A Frost Advisory takes hold across far northern Minnesota early Monday morning as the season’s first widespread cold snap settles over the Northland.
The National Weather Service in Duluth issued the advisory for Koochiching, North St. Louis, and Northern Cook and Lake counties, running from 1 AM to 8 AM CDT Monday.
Where the Cold Will Bite
Forecasters say temperatures will drop as low as 33 degrees, cold enough to produce widespread frost formation across the advisory area.
The advisory covers a swath of the Arrowhead region, including the cities of International Falls, Isabella and Ely, along with surrounding rural areas of Koochiching, North St. Louis, Cook and Lake counties.
Sensitive Plants at Risk
The NWS warns that frost could damage sensitive outdoor vegetation, and any tender plants left uncovered overnight may not survive.
Gardeners and anyone with late-season crops still in the ground are urged to take steps now to protect tender plants before temperatures bottom out overnight.
Part of a Longer Cold Stretch
Monday’s frost is just the start. NWS Duluth has been tracking a prolonged period of frost and potentially sub-freezing temperatures stretching from Sunday night into Wednesday night, with the most widespread cold expected Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Beyond the overnight frost, NWS Duluth is also flagging breezy conditions across the region, with gusts up to 30 mph expected as the cooler air mass moves in.
What to Do Before the Cold Arrives
Cover or bring in potted plants, flower beds and any remaining garden vegetables before temperatures drop after midnight.
Lightweight sheets, towels or frost cloths draped over plants can trap ground heat and offer several degrees of protection. Avoid using plastic directly on foliage, since it can conduct cold and cause more damage where it touches leaves.
Anyone with outdoor pets should also make sure they have a warm, dry shelter available overnight, since temperatures in the low 30s can catch animals unprepared for the season’s first real cold snap.
