Extended Interview: Sen. Thom Tillis on the Rough Road Ahead for Republicans
In an insightful extended interview with “60 Minutes” correspondent Ross Douthat, Senator Thom Tillis shares his candid perspectives on the challenges facing the Republican Party as the midterm elections approach. With a mix of candidness and critique, Tillis labels certain members of President Trump’s inner circle as “sycophants,” raising questions about their influence on the party’s direction.
Throughout the conversation, Sen. Tillis also touches on a variety of topics—from why he named his dog after Mitch McConnell to his thoughts on potential candidates for future elections. Highlights include his concerns about affordability issues and his criticism of figures like RFK Jr. and Pete Hegseth. As the conversation unfolds, Tillis makes it clear that he believes the Republican Party must learn from past mistakes if it hopes to remain competitive in 2024 and beyond.
This episode not only delves into the immediate electoral challenges but also examines the broader implications for the GOP as it navigates a post-Trump landscape. With insights drawn from his unique position in the Senate, Sen. Tillis provides a thoughtful look at what lies ahead and how the party might adapt to changing voter sentiments.

His reference to Mitch McConnell just killed it for me… sorry, no coming back. He says denying there is an affordability problem among a segment of society is to not work on the problem, and then Obamacare was an over reach. Straight contradiction. Thank you 60 min for the truth telling interview.
What's the saying? All hat and no cattle?
He did not say there was no way to FIRE the president?!?! Y’all have lost the plot and forgotten your job.
You helped him get into power. Clean up your mess.
It's wild how these guys like to sell the story that they came from humble beginnings and still manage to prop up a spoiled billionaire who profits off the backs of poor and middle class Americans.
Till is a disgrace,a coward,he is no better than Trump
Pro 2nd Amendment, in the time of mass killing every day. Sounds great.
I wouldn't buy this book if I ran out of toilet paper! He's not worth my $hit!
Maybe a good man . But why does he excuse Trump??? Why??? Thats makes him a coward.
MAGA is finished.
I won’t be watching this show again what happened to true journalism and the truth and decency you lost my leadership and my friends
Yeah, why didn't you say it Tom. Too little, too late.
He wasn't fascist enough for maga so he's bye bye
For every stinking Republican senators like McConnell and Tillis who criticize the impeachment process itself rather than their own cop out of holding this maniac accountable is just disgusting
This was a very good interview
Respectfully Mr. Thom Tillis, you knew who you voted for. You voted party line. And now you're on a campaign to save face and make a little coin selling a book along the way.
I don't buy it. 👎
I don’t agree with his politics or the pathetic reasons why he voted to confirm people that are obviously unqualified for the job. They were hired because the person currently occupying our White House is also unqualified for the job. We have a “divide and conquer” president and the majority of Americans are continuing to allow him to divide us. We shouldn’t allow anyone to divide us no matter what political party they belong to. Unfortunately the Republican Party has convinced itself that democracy is optional because of him. They forgot who our governor is supposed to work for.
In this interview Tillis is telling the truth. He voted the way he did because losing his seat would mean losing power in the Senate. He was scared too. While I appreciate his honesty, will this change how he votes? Will he continue to vote the way that man wants, to keep his seat and avoid “backlash”? Will he continue to vote against our best interests?
I appreciated the questions from the corespondent. I don’t expect you to start with question about his childhood. Great interview.
Wild to hear a senator say “I’ll defer to you buddy?” Like do your job and do research and interviews etc tf
Tillis is a coward
i like him
60 Minutes is now one of the worst propaganda shows on the market. I will never watch it again. All of my friends agree 60 minutes should be ashamed of themselves more Trump propaganda.
Classic GOP on the way out the door to still get HIS good ole boy treatment! NO ONE CARES ABOUT TOM TILLIS! He’s a traitor!
Thom is auditioning for his new role as a liberal commentator.
This man needs to take responsibility for his poor choices instead of punting it to others.
This "free" country is doomed if people in power only speak up on their way out of the political office. Tillis had the power to say "no" when it mattered.
Tillis doesn't "expect a rough midterm election for Republicans." He's working to make it happen.
So many elected Republicans just hate their own voter base.
Boo!
