How Navy Officers Are Trained At The Grueling 13-Week Officer Candidate School
The U.S. Navy’s Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island, is a rigorous 13-week program designed to transform civilians and enlisted sailors into proficient naval officers. This intensive schooling is crucial for those aspiring to lead within the Navy, pushing candidates through a comprehensive training regime that encompasses physical, mental, and leadership challenges.
The training unfolds in three distinct phases: indoctrination, academic study, and applied leadership. Each stage is crafted to ensure candidates not only adapt to military life but also acquire the essential skills necessary for their future roles. The indoctrination phase kicks off the transformation, immersing candidates in Navy values while familiarizing them with military customs and courtesies.
One of the initial tests of strength and resilience is the “Initial Strength Test.” Candidates must demonstrate their physical readiness through rigorous exercises, which set the tone for the demanding weeks ahead. Swimming qualifications further challenge participants, as they must prove their ability to perform under pressure in a water survival context—a skill vital for any naval officer.
As training progresses to the academic phase, candidates engage in intense study across multiple subjects, including weapons, engineering, navigation, and leadership principles. Led by experienced instructors, many of whom are Marines, the academic curriculum prepares candidates for the analytical and decision-making demands they will face in the field.
In the midst of physical exertion and intense studies, candidates participate in drills and simulations that reflect real-world scenarios they may encounter at sea. Damage control training is a crucial component, teaching candidates how to manage emergencies aboard a ship. This includes everything from firefighting techniques to flooding control, showcasing the unpredictable nature of life in the Navy.
The highlight of OCS is the “Battle Stations” exercise, wherein candidates undergo a series of tactical challenges designed to simulate combat scenarios. This culmination of their training tests not only their physical endurance but also their mental acuity and leadership skills, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and quick decision-making in high-pressure situations.
Finally, the journey wraps up with the “Ship Selection” process, allowing graduates to choose the types of vessels they aspire to serve on. This choice signifies the culmination of their training and the beginning of their careers as commissioned officers in the Navy.
Graduation marks not just the end of a grueling journey, but the start of a new chapter. Those who successfully complete OCS emerge not only as officers but also as leaders prepared to guide enlisted sailors through the complex landscape of modern naval operations. The training at OCS instills a sense of duty, resilience, and commitment to excellence that defines the U.S. Navy’s future leaders.

y’all should totally do Air Force Officer training school or OTS down at Maxwell Air Force Base Alabama 😊👍🏽🤙🏽
Y’all gotta do Coast Guard OCS next
All fully injected with the medical experiment…. Hopefully myocarditis and cancer treatment on board.
Now what I want to know is if the drill instructors capped their cursing due to it being filmed. Any prior OCS candidates, former or current, want to chime in on that?
Man if only I was younger I’d enlist
Hell yeah
Did not know they had blue ropes over there in Rhode Island. I thought it was only on Great Lakes lol
Do Navy ROTC candidates have to go to Navy Officer Candidate School?
Grueling…. lol… ok
Wtf they got there ow room smh
I graduated from Navy OCS in Newport 40 years ago. Seems like yesterday.
Not all enlisted are cut out for the officer role.
《Full Metal Jacket》
"Grueling" is an extreme hyperbole lmao
As an NBA fan I’ve studied NBA history and I’ve concluded that the greatest NBA player who’s ever lived is LeBron James and also by far. Here is why he is. He had longevity, has played the most years, has the most points, is a 4 time NBA Finals champion, it’s MVP every time, 4 time regular season MVP although deserved it more, great at offense, great at defense, has won a ton of games and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.
17-25!!!!🎉
I'm a former nuclear field recruit. I followed instructions and didn't drink water during an exercise, becoming horribly dehydrated and passing out, resulting in a terrible head injury that led to a medical separation and lifelong issues. Withholding water access is excessively stupid and causes an immense amount of damage, and it proves nothing.
I want to be yelled at all day be told what to do and be deprived of water Pfft.
Air Force OTS next!
Why do we have OCS school and the Academy?
Get ready for Venezuela boys !!
I've been waiting to see this video for a looooong time.
Are you f•cking kidding me?? "I hadda jump off a thingie a bit taller than me, into a HEATED POOL, and that's just something only a 'true warrior' could accomplish…" THIS?? This is the pool from whence my leadership in the enlisted Navy was drawn?? Holy F•CK!! No WONDER so many of my "superior" officers seemed to be utter morons, completely out of touch with the real world. Good god, my ENLISTED Navy basic training was more demanding than this, and the Navy isn't exactly known for being excessively tough. Not ONE of these snowflakes could possibly survive USMC basic.
Missed the part where they teach it is ok to sleep with the enlisted guys' wives and their command will cover for them.
10 ft? Daunting? That's 3 meters. 7-year-olds do that as a fun activity at every public outdoor pool I've been to. Do those places not exist in the US so those candidates aren't used to it?
Ah OCS… Good times!
Funniest part is you don’t realize it until later that you’re actually on one of the nicer bases in the Navy
Women in the navy, is this a netflix reality show?
Atten-HUT!
This is a very fat generation
Training officers like this is very stupid. Courses like this are for recruits. They should require anyone who wants to be an officer to be a petty officer first: then just have an officer training course.
Those Navy camouflage with black boots single handedly the dumbest uniform combo look ever. Worse than the army UCP. You don't have Harvard graduates making those decisions I see.
13:00 "i grew up in the navy, but cant swim,"
ok, what the HECK
its " DAGON"
why is he telling them to scream, "aye sir," shoul;dnt they know when?
24:07 filopino mafia
Newport chow hall is a solid 10/10 best food ive had
33;03 , unfortuantely at this point, what is this guy talkign about? communist
Navy produces the most toxic officers especially SWOs and Submariners. They are the worst. The rated (flyers) guys are real cool.
My dad, who was a BMCM at the time, was offered a LDO promotion. When he went to OCS, he knew more about being a Naval officer than his instructors. This was back in 1960. I understand that nowadays LDO’s no longer go to OCS.
screw this!
It's crazy to me how for a lot of these future navy personnel, jumping off the 3 meter board is such a daunting task? Like every public swimming pool has one and they're mainly used by children, no? I'm not fronting anyone, it's fine to be nervous, but at least where I'm from it's a mandatory part of middle school P.E. to jump from the 3 and 5 meter boards and voluntary to jump from the 10m board, which all the kids inevitably force each other to do via peer pressure.
I’m an RP and went to RP A school there, I used to enjoy watching the officers just marching down the street and getting yelled at
Ayo I'm here right now! Class 07-26 baby!
I WONDER IF GUNNY GUERERRO IS/WAS NOT RELATEDTO MY TI OF FLT 109, USAF BASIC LACKLAND, TSGT PEDRO GUERRERO (SPRING 1970)??
Fighting for Israel
Total crush on the black haired chick. She's gonna kill it, she's got great communication skills.

Wtf? They only gotta swim 50 yards???
Girls need to have their heads shaved too or quit doing it to guys… Equality right?
