Movie Summary: The Story of Esther Costello
“The Story of Esther Costello,” a poignant film starring the iconic Joan Crawford and the talented Heather Sears, unfolds a moving narrative about compassion, redemption, and the complexities of human relationships. Directed by David Miller and adapted from the novel by John D. MacDonald, the film offers a rich exploration of emotional resilience and moral dilemmas.
The story centers around Margaret Landi, portrayed by Crawford, a wealthy socialite who stumbles upon the life of Esther Costello, a young girl rendered deaf, blind, and mute after an unfortunate accident in her childhood. Captivated by Esther’s plight, Margaret becomes a devoted guardian, dedicating her resources and time to educate and rehabilitate the girl, portrayed brilliantly by Sears. Their bond deepens as Margaret’s efforts yield positive results, demonstrating the power of love and dedication.
However, the narrative takes a darker turn with the return of Carlo Landi, Margaret’s estranged husband, played by Rossano Brazzi. Carlo’s opportunistic nature poses a significant threat to Esther’s recovery. He seeks to exploit the girl’s burgeoning abilities for financial gain, thrusting Margaret into a battle not only for Esther’s future but also for her own principles and moral compass.
“The Story of Esther Costello” is not just a tale of overcoming physical limitations; it also challenges viewers to reflect on the ethics of exploitation and the true meaning of altruism. With powerful performances, particularly from Crawford, whose portrayal of a fiercely protective mother figure captivates audiences, the film navigates the tumultuous terrain of human relationships with depth and sensitivity.
As the dynamic between the characters unfolds, the film’s themes of sacrifice, empowerment, and moral integrity resonate, leaving a lasting impact. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by those living with disabilities and the transformative power of love and support.

Joan Crawform and Heather Sears created great moments. Joan's expressions explain miles of emotions in a split second. She's amazing. I also enjoy a film that doesn't douse every scene w a soundtrack; which at times is as distracting as a laugh track
Thanks for sharing on YT 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Love old classics, I'll sit on the 🛋️ couch all day ( leave me alone ) lol☕🥐
Joan was a child abuser. All she ever cared about was being famous. She adopted children for attention.
She overacts. Not for me…
Wonderful but sad movie😿

Meghan Markle reminds me of the acting of Joan Crawford.
how very, very tritely Irish … top o'the mornin' and faith 'n' begorrah
When I first watched this movie I cried all the way through it. I am legally blind and autistic. I've got haunting memories of being at a blind school for years and they mistreated me real bad when I was there. Whenever they slept Esther in the face, it reminds me of when Mom used to sweat me around all the time when I was growing up. She didn't know how to handle blind autistic people and we didn't know I had autism back then
I asked the AI for a film in which J. B. Dykes' "Lead Kindly Light" had been used, and the result was this. In fact, this hymn is sung by a choir of girls at about minute 59.
I had seen this film many years ago on TV., and I agree with the many positive comments viewers have written. Greetings from Mexico.
Kids fighting over bombs, they need toys bad!
Mommy dearest was my introduction to Joan Crawford I never expected to like anything about her but she is a pretty good actress and good at picking scripts which is more important than being a good actress.
I'm checking out all of Joan's movies! The most strking thing about the movie is the lovely 1950's style, interior design, fashion, etc. Beautiful b&w. The teaching techniques at the school were interesting. I do think that the movie would have benefited from a tighter structure/pacing, as it could have been shorter. I liked it. Thanks for posting.
This movie was superb!
Great movie!
I have never seen this movie! How risqué, hard to like Rassano Brazzi in this one. Thank you for posting!! Great movie, I adore the classics ❤
What a horrible picture! But a lot of charity work actually covers up worldly greed. Did anyone else notice the Pepsi ad on the wall near the beginning of the picture? Joan Crawford is not a favorite of mine…never was. She always comes off in movies or in real interviews etc as haughty and proud and full of self aggrandizement. Why would anyone act in such a film?
Thank you! What a brilliant film ❤
I love seeing Joan play loving characters. Playing horrible women gets old.
I have never seen Joan Crawford be so compassionate Lol. Good Movie.
In the days when women were graceful
Why didnt she report him to police!!
The cure for blindness & deafness is a roll in the hay with Rossano Brazzi. . Who knew.
7 mins in and have already seen 2 groups of ads. 🙄
How crasy that there is a pepsi cola sign at 19 42, Joan married the president of Pepsi and Chairman Alfred Steele in 1955, and served on the board after his death in 1959.
فيلم جميل فعلا

Captions should be enabled.
NOW THIS WAS A MOVIE, HOLLYWOOD DOESN'T MAKE GREAT MOVIES LIKE THIS ANYMORE.❤
What a horrific ending with an adulterous pedophile raping the blind and deaf girl! I don't know how many times I said out loud "creep!" before that happened. This was a love/hate movie for me. Wish it would have ended differently.
Sería posible subir la traducción de esta película, hace mucho que la buscaba, soy de chile
Joan Crawford reminds me of Victor Mature

This Movie Was Magnificent 👏💯💯💯💯💯❤
Fantastic movie. I am really getting into the old film Noir movies, even tho I wasn't born until the 1960's
WOW you won't find one modern movie like this nowadays thanks for posting! 🖤👍
sottotitoli please.
Fancy letting a evil child abuser play a role like this.
Interesting how alcohol and cigs are almost like characters themselves in many of these old dramas. The men who drank heavily were always the bad guys. Everyone used alcohol to steady their nerves after some drama or tragedy or to toast to their being in love. Cigs were metaphors for sex or sexual desire and man/woman bonding. Now we have actors who don't smoke or drink as much in movies but the movies are bloody bores….
Great film but the attempt at the Irish accent is bloody desperate…typical Hollywood..
You have never seen acting until you have seen Joan Crawford in a movie. My favourite film is "Rain".
Thank you FANTASTIC film x
Many comments here from Crawford fans who didn't know about "The Story of Esther Costello" but enjoyed it immensely. One other Crawford film many may not have heard about but might also enjoy is a made-for-television drama entitled "Della" filmed in 1964. You can watch it on You Tube under the title "Royal Bay".
